Can anyone tell me if the flash should automatically flash if taking in low light conditions or do you need to the flash first? The flash off symbol is shown on the screen

I think you need to raise the flash manually first. The manual reads:

1. Press the flash unit pop-up button to raise the flash. When the flash unit is not raised, the flash mode is set to (Off) automatically. You cannot change the setting.
2. Press (Flash) on the control button.
3. Select the desired mode with the control button.

go into menu and set your flash to on, then it will come on every time you take a photo.
