Sony CES 2016 Press Conference Live, January 5th, 5pm PST

In a little over 24 hours, Sony CEO and President, Kaz Hirai will take to stage in Las Vegas to set the tone and plan for the company in 2016. Lasting generally an hour, the Sony CES 2016 keynote will mainly comprise of the company’s electronics division though don’t be surprised if PlayStation VR pops up. After all, like drones and wearables in previous years, expect VR to be the buzz word from CES, even if most VR products have yet to get into consumer hands.

4K HDR TVs and Android TV
Bigger, better, and cheaper should be the tagline for TVs each year. With a majority of Sony TVs having already transitioned to 4K, expect their HD line to diminish further as 4K becomes more affordable compared to the year prior. Obvious things will be an expanded 4K HDR line with improved image quality (mainly blacks) and better upscaling.

Android TV is mainly controlled by Google, meaning there is little Sony can change on the software side but expect this year’s TV line to get a much needed hardware boost with faster processors, RAM, and perhaps storage, something that’s sorely needed from the sluggish system.

Sony’s flagship 950B line never saw an update in 2015 so hopefully Sony will release a true predecessor. Fans have been clamoring for a true top-of-the-line TV from Sony without speakers and while the X930C series shines, it does included a set of large Magnetic Fluid Speakers which makes wall mounting it more difficult and a waste for those with already a better audio solution.

In 2015, Sony also took things down a few inches from 79-inch to 75-inch with their X900 series. Hopefully this year we’ll see a return of larger TVs that scale beyond 80-inches. (Seriously Sony, I have a 120-inch projector that’s begging to be replaced by a 4K TV but I can’t bring myself down to 75-inches!)

PlayStation VR

In order for PlayStation VR to succeed, Sony needs to move beyond gaming and CES the place for that. With Facebook and others investing heavily in PlayStation_VRVR and creating non-gaming content, Sony which owns a movie studio will likely show PS VR with new forms of content, mainly entertainment. In the past, Sony Pictures has played a key roll in helping push 3D and 4K for Sony Electronics and there is no reason why PS VR won’t be the same.

Imagine the next Spider-Man movie (which is now mostly being handled by Marvel) to be released on PS VR. It will either be the ultimate movie experience to be able to swing throughout New York City with Spidy or a sure hit barf fest. Either way, I’m down to try a demo. Don’t be surprised to see plenty of PS4’s as well to show off all the new PS VR games announced at PSX.

Sony Mobile (Xperia Smartphones and Tablets)

While the pink Xperia Z5 might show up at CES, I don’t think we’ll be seeing any new phones at this show. Instead, expect Sony to reinforce and reintroduce the world to their current lineup of smartphones. Same goes for tablets though I’m not even sure there will be a successor to the Xperia Z4 Tablet. A little birdie told me that tablet sales for Sony can be counted in the thousands. Ouch.

Sony Mobile (Wearables and SmartWatch)

Predicting Sony Mobile is a bit hard as the company has announced products ranging from CES to MWC and everything in between. With the enormous success of the Apple Watch (and it’s true, despite what you may have read. For context, the Apple Watch has sold Sony_SmartWatch_LTEmore that all other smartwatch makers combined in under 8 months) and a lack of new release in 2015, I think we’ll finally see a SmartWatch 4 from Sony. With no control over the OS, expect new hardware with refined materials and bands. Sony will likely transition their entire watch fleet to include heart rate monitors and a cellular LTE chips to allow for greater freedom which should be a sure thing.

The big question will be if Sony follows suit by offering a round SmartWatch unit in the footsteps of Samsung and others which I believe to be a mistake. While good in theory, the reality is that we live in a world that’s centered around square content. While elegant in specific scenarios, the reality is that most content on a round watch either gets cut off at awkward times or needs to be cropped more centrally to reveal itself which then creates a lot of dead space.

Alongside a new SmartWatch 4, we should also see new SmartBands and other small sensors as well.

4K Action Cam and Camcorders

No really, 4K everything is part of the current Sony motto and camcorders are no different. Sony has already been working hard on releasing 4K Action Cams and camcorders and 2016 will be no different. With a lot of advancement in their image sensor division, expect this year’s series to retain similar megapixel count to Sony_4K_Action_Cam_X1000v_04their predecessor but with improved optics and clarity. Remember, more megapixels doesn’t always mean better.

In the same way that 4K prices have been dropping in TVs, expect for this year’s camcorders to offer 4K at even lower prices. Hopefully we can be done with this built-in projectors in camcorder nonsense as well. Cool on paper but hardly particle in real life.

Digital Cameras

Throughout most of 2015, Sony has been slowly releasing new Alpha and RX series cameras so while they’ll be on display at CES, don’t expect any new models or lenses to pop up.

Drones

Sony is getting in the drone business with Japanese robotics firm ZMP and in doing so have created Aerosens, a new subsidiary. I’m hoping the drone will be on display though I’m doubtful we’ll see an area where they’re being shown off like Parrot or Sphero does each year.
