xg8096 voice search problem

When I press MIC activate, the light only comes on for maybe 0.5 secs, not long enough to say much, and the TV only shows say half of what I say. Pressing MIC a second time sometimes shows the rest of what I said. Additionally, "google assistant can't be reached" is the usual response to the search.

FYI, this problem turned out to be the batteries in the remote control were low, apparently making the microphone do spurious things.
