Image stabilizer noise on Sony HDR-CX250, what is normal?

Hi all,

Could you give your opinions, please:

My CX250 image stabilizer seems to keep irritating whining noise which is clearly hear in recordings. Sometimes the whine is hear even if cam is not moved but I can replicate it by moving camera downwards like in my demo. Seems that the noise is not heard when moving another directions.

My demo in Youtube about the problem.

Is this really normal?? I have checked another user's recordings in Youtube and they don't have this kind of noise.

Thanks!

Hi there, welcome to the Sony Forums

I'm not sure about that particular model, but steadyshot vibration usually is audible if there is no other audio input, due to the way the camera automatically amplifies the soundtrack to pick up the loudest available sound.

Bearing in mind built-in mics always pick up some camera noise and the noisiest component by far is the steadyshot mechanism, I'd hesitate to say there's a fault with your camera. For footage without audio, it's best to have the mic switched off or overdubbed; footage with reasonable-level audio is often loud enough to disguise most kinds of interference.

The first thing to consider when recording very low-level audio is switching the steadyshot off in the camera's settings menu. However if you want to record with steadyshot functionality but not its noise, the best way is to use an external microphone plugged into the audio input jack.

Cheers

Mick

Thanks for the answer. I consider to replace the camcorder once to find out if that's normal.

Noise is also audible also by ear while handling the camera not just in videos and that is strange to me.
