DISCOVER: Sony’s Original Blended Material

You may have heard about Road to Zero - Sony’s global environmental plan that strives to achieve a zero environmental footprint throughout the life cycle of our products by 2050.

On this mission, we are involved in numerous conservation activities, one of them being using paper-based packaging instead of relying on plastic.

Here, we invite you to take a look at our Original Blended Material – packaging made from 100% paper – developed by Sony.

What is Sony’s “Original Blended Material”?

Original Blended Material 2.JPGOur Original Blended Material is a durable paper material made from bamboo, sugarcane fibres, and post-consumer recycled paper.

While most paper packaging comes from mature perennial trees, our blended packaging uses plants with a short growth cycle. This means far less C02 is emitted as the plants can be grown, sorted, and harvested as needed, compared to the logging and life-cycle care of trees that can take years to grow. What’s more, the materials we use are all available around the world’s largest manufacturing hubs in Asia, reducing shipping emissions.

Suitable for a diverse range of packaging, you’ll notice our Original Blended Material being used for more and more upcoming products. In fact, if you bought the WF-1000XM4 headphones, you’ll already have been hands-on with it!

Working together to help the earth stay beautiful for the future

The use of tactile, high quality materials that have been created with the environment in mind not only contribute to our own sustainability goals; Sony’s Original Blended Material is designed to create greater awareness and purpose in our users too.

The outer box, inner box, sleeves, cushions…everything is Sony’s Original Blended Material. Words and text can be embossed without the need for ink, plus no unnecessary colouring is required - the uncoloured, organic look is not only safer and lower-resource, but it is a beautiful reminder of our joint efforts to leave this earth as undisturbed as possible for the future.

And finally, our Original Blended Material can be recycled alongside other paper materials without the need for additional sorting, making recycling easy.
