Lost Home Screen

For no reason that I can think of my home screen has disappeared and been replaced with a number / alpha "pad" which has a green telephone at the bottom and next to it it says "Emergency call" If I tap on any of the numbers it's as if I'm entering a password - the number appears for asplit second and is then replaced with a dot.

I can't drag down from the top to get to settings or anything else and if I drag the screen across there's just one screen with a large plus sign in the middle and another one which takes me to my camera.

I've switched it on and off, taken the sim out and put it back in and don't know what else to do.

I can receive calls, but can't get to anywhere that will let me do anything else, although the various tones (message, Facebook etc still sound)

It sounds like you have some typ of pattern lock at your phone. Have you installed any safety application or added an Exchange account lately which require this kind of protection? If not, I suggest that you perform a software repair on your phone via PC Companion:

In PC Companion you press start on Support Zone > Start on Update the phone/tablet software > Repair phone/tablet (the blue clickable link in the message) > Follow these steps without having your device connected to the PC.

Follow the instruction that appears in the program and do not connect your device until this guide tells you how to connect it.

It seems that the screen became locked somehow - although I have no idea how.

I guessed at a number that might unlock it and it worked ! I don't remember ever setting up a security code and this has never happened to me before, however . .  all's well that ends well.
