External HDD Won't Turn Off

I've attached an external HDD to my new Sony w705 but the HDD doesn't turn off when the TV powers off.

Does anyone know if this is usual or is there a setting somewhere to get it to turn off?

Previous TVs (not Sony) I've had will turn off the HDD, just the same as it will if the HDD is connected to a PC/laptop.  It may not sound like a big thing but it's attached to my bedroom TV and the HDD power light stays on and it's brighter than the ISS.

Yes, I have noticed that on my WD external HDD too, however mine switch off after 10-15 minutes after my EX720 is turned off. I also noticed that if you turn the TV off and on within this time period, the boot up process doesn't "mount" the external devices, like the weren't dismounted or switched off. I'm not sure if there is any setting to control this behaviour though.

I would also like an explanation from Sony as to why this is happening with a W605B. Apologies, I now see that the HDD does switch off after a set period of time.
