Help with recording televison programmes direct on to CX520

Please, please help me. I have a Sony Bravia CX520 32inch which I only bought on the understanding I can record television programmes direct onto the tv. I have since learnt this might not be the case and wonder if anyone could please advise if and how I can record without having to use my Freeview recording machine. Hi, to be able to record, you have to plug in an external hard drive and format it so that the TV recognises the drive. The TV has no built in hard drive, so you cannot record directly to it.
