55XF9005 gives off unpleasant odour

I recently bought this TV and since the first time I switched it on it has given off a nasty electrical/electronic type smell, which I hoped would go away after a couple of days. Unfortunately it hasn’t improved, in fact it gets worse when playing HDR content. The smell is so bad it gave me headaches every time I used it, so I am having to return it for a refund.

I read from reviews that the TV should run relatively cool, yet my TV felt quite hot to the touch at the top after HDR had been running for a while.

It is a real shame as I loved the picture quality, but am concerned that I may get another with the same issue, so don’t have much confidence in this model, hence asking the retailer for a refund, rather than a replacement.

It may be that I was just unlucky and got a faulty one but I wondered if anyone else had similar issues and if so did you get it resolved?

Hi Hackers48,

I recommend turning off the TV from the mains immediately and contacting Sony. This might get dangerous if there is a faulty component causing this issue. I'd say better safe than sorry. If you still have the TV you can call Sony on this number: 02073652810.

Cheers,

Is it like an electrical buring smell? How close do you need to be to smell this, I mean do you litrally have to press your nose to the plastic? I have never noticed this with my TV but then I don't go smelling it.

Thanks stormyUK. Yes a sort of electrical/hot metal smell which I can smell from across the room. I thought it could be new components off-gassing at first but it didn't dissipate after a few days use.

The TV is going back for a refund.

Yeh, can happen, my PS4 Pro did this for a couple of days to be honest, but as you say if its not going, and smelt across the room, definately need a replacement from the retailer.

Hi MiCal1967.

It doesn't make any sounds at all. Just gives off a nasty smell which builds up and can be smelt from across the room after about an hour of use. Reading online it sounds like faulty capacitors or similar components that could be leaking and giving off toxic fumes. Would explain why I got headaches when using the TV.

On the first link you provided, I did see your post about if the TV gives off any smell to contact Sony Service Centre, but I have contacted the retailer and am returning for a refund. Will probably buy another one but from a different retailer just in case it is a faulty batch.

Thanks for the links and your advice.

Thanks Almou_10. Appreciate your advice. I stopped using it a few days ago. It is being returned to the retailer today.

Was the smell coming from a specific spot on the TV? I have an unpleasant odor coming from a specific spot from the back vents.
