Does HDMI Port 2 support 4K as well as HDMI Port 4?

Hi there

I posted recently on here about problems I had with connecting my PC to my Sony XR-55A80J TV, which is now solved but the downside is that the PC is now connected to HDMI Port 4 which is the port I originally used to connect my Panasonic DP-UB820 4K player to watch 4K films on as this was one of the highest spec ports along with Port 3 Arc which I use to connect my Sonos speakers to.

My question then is, does HDMI Port 2 which I now use to connect to my 4K player provide the same quality picture for 4K movies as the HDMI Port 4? Or are they both the same?

When I go into settings to setup the external devices for the player, it allows you to choose between two options listed below;

1. Other than below

   Choose this if you are unsure.

2. 4K HFR device

If I choose option 2 (4K HFR device) it then says to reconnect the device to Port 3 so I choose option 1 (Other than below) which then displays current resolution  4K 24p, which I then assume that it is set to 4K? But as good as Port 4? 

Anyone know more about this please?

Hi @jolb72 

You can’t go wrong if you ignore the “External device setup”. All 4 HDMI ports are 4K compatible. Simply plug your device into your chosen port and use “HDMI signal format” and set your chosen port to Enhanced if your device is capable of displaying HDR.

You only need ports 3 & 4 if you are using games consoles like the PS5 where you can take advantage of the VRR format.

If you are not connecting a games console then all 4 ports will give you the same quality picture. Just remember to set it to Enhanced if you want HDR.

If you want to name the inputs, use Manage inputs. All of this is under External inputs. I personally don’t bother and leave mine named as HDMI 1, 2, 3 & 4.

All the HDMI ports support 4K but only ports 3 and 4 support 4K 120hz (4K HFR). If you use a device that supports 4K 120hz HDR then you need to plug them into port 3 or 4 these devices include PS5 ,Xbox Series X, High End PC with top of the Range Nvidia or AMD graphics card or an Amp or soundbar that support 4K 120hz passthrough.  So on external port setup you only select the 4K HFR option if you are connecting once of those devices.  Hope this helps

Thanks for the responses guys and your help and advice. That's solved my way of thinking and I'm happy to use HDMI port 2 for my 4K player.
