Hi everyone,
Just an update on the current EPG issue that seems to be affecting a significant amount of Sony & Pioneer DVD recorders.
Models potentially affected are:
RDR-HXD770/870/970/1070/790/890/995/1095
It appears that something has changed in the way that these devices are receiving EPG data. So we are already trying to understand what has happened and how this can be rectified, realising that a large number of people have been affected.

Latest Update 22/07/2013 15:41
Sony has been working with the broadcasters to try to work out why this issue has occurred and how to remedy it. With your help Sony has discovered that clearing down potentially corrupt broadcast data (EPG) stored within the machine will remedy this issue.
Whilst we continue to work with the broadcasters, and ahead of any final statement, we recommend the following steps to remedy this issue:
1/.
i). Turn off the DVD/HDD recorder at the mains (ie remove the plug from the wall)
ii). Wait 30 seconds
iii). Reconnect the power.
The set may now work correctly.
However, in certain cases it may be necessary to carry out a full factory reset as follows (please note this will return the product to its original out-of-box 'Easy Set Up' position so you will need to set-up the product as if it were new):
2/.
i). Make sure the DVD/HDD recorder is turned 'on'
ii). Remove any DVD disc from the machine and close the drawer.
iii). Press and hold the "Stop" button, then press and release the "on/standby" button, then release the "Stop" button (ON THE RECORDER, not the remote)
iv). The product is then turned 'off' and all settings are reset to factory default, with all potentially corrupt 'tuning' and 'EPG' data removed.
v). The DVD/HDD recorder will now need to be re-tuned and set up following the step-by-step on screen instructions - Note: Choose "Digital Guide" rather than "Guide Plus" at the relevant stage of the set-up (Guide Plus is no longer broadcast).
In the unlikely event that you still experience difficulties, please contact the Sony consumer helpline on 0844 8466 555 or for more info visit: http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/topics/RDR_HN

Hi Bennegar... I too had problems getting the firmware update. It "hung" on update-5 I got fed up after 2 hours and pulled the plug. When I checked I found it HAD updated to V1.7. Machine is working okay too. Do you know how to check the firmware version? Yiu may find, as I did, that it has updated even though it seemed to fail.
Hi tepee0_0,
the following guide should enable you to check your firmware version..
- Check the recorder firmware version:
- Power on the television and make sure it is tuned to the inputs to which the DVD recorder is connected.
- Power on the DVD recorder.
- On the remote control, press the SYSTEM MENU button.
- Select Initial Setup .
- Press the ENTER button.
- Select Audio Out .
- Press the ENTER button.
- Select Dolby Digital Output .
- Press the ENTER button.
- Highlight Dolby Digital and press the ANGLE button.
- The firmware version currently installed on the DVD recorder will be listed on the television screen as VERSION:
- To exit, press the SYSTEM MENU button.

Having reported this issue to the BBC I got a reply today and it points to a which squarely points the blame at SONY.

I wasnt aware of this problem until today when I saw the BBC story and thought I had better investigate what model I had. My machine was stuck in 'Update' so I just held down the Power button until it went off then restarted.
As I'd been out enjoying the sunny weather rather than sat infront of my tv I'd missed all the chaos and after a couple of flickers everything was back to normal. EPG normal, RDR recording as normal.
I have to say - terra lolz to the people on here (mainly new members who joined this w/e) making all sorts of threats and accusations against Sony - you wldve thought they had kidnapped their children or something rather than a 3rd party update of their EPG hadnt quite gone to plan - a few people taking their home entertainment WAY too seriously - turn it off - go to the pub - enjoy the weather.
Thanx to all the 'nerds' who tried to gave sensible advice that was unfortunately largely lost in the witchhunt against Sony

I think SONY should be ashamed of themselves. Fancy them not realising that a rd party program would cause this problem. They should know these things.
... and once they found out what had happened SONY should have telephoned each of us individually to let us know.
Come on, its only a PVR *****. The world hasn't ended has it?
Get over it and move on. I still think SONY are one of the best manufacturers of mass market home entertainment products, and this episode hasn't changed my opinion.

I'm in Northern Ireland. Just followed your instructions to check what version I have. Mine currently says 1.65.
I have my system set for automatic updates. Is there something else I should be doing myself? I have never downloaded or made any updates to my RDR-HXD870 Recorder.

I have an RDR-HXD790 and the problem now seems to be resolved. It was still stuck on update but after holding down the power button I eventually got the Welcome message and after that all seems to be functioning correctly. Hope that continues and thanks to anyone involved in sorting the problem. 😉
If it is relevent I am in Kent, south east UK.

Its great that its all working again and my Sony recorder is back to normal but Im now left with a brand new machine (Humax) that I purchased yesterday as i thought my Sony machine had broken Friday night. I never noticed these threads til today. Im hoping i can take the new machine back to Curry's otherwise I will be looking for compensation from Sony.
