Sony KDL**HX923

Should i be worried, apparently complaints are comming in already for this new tv on dark verticle lines either side of the screen!, i have seen this before on the LG i had that went back for a full refund as it was the area where the ribbon cable joins at the screen for the backlight (could be seen from the front) i had 3 of them and the engineer said its not right, heres the pics of the Sony.

"FEATURE"!!   That's outrageous, because it recalls that most famous response of all software developers: "That's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature."

In other words, "features" don't need to be fixed.  This is nonsense.  If something is not deliberate then it's not a feature, it's a problem.  And those creases are not deliberate.

We've each just blown almost £3k on this TV, on Sony's FLAGSHIP TV.   And they are telling us that this obvious picture fault is actually a feature?

That is an astonishing position to take, and has shaken my confidence in Sony.  There's another thing that shakes my confidence: I've seen some of the photos, and I wonder how on earth anyone thought they were suitable for sale.  Is there no QA in Sony?  I mean, it's not like we're buying a no-name box from Tesco's, this is the top-of-the-line Rolls Royce television from one of the finest TV makers in the world.  They should care about their reputation.

Anyway, I bought mine on Saturday (delivery next Saturday), and I got a clear agreement from the store manager that if I can see any creases, they will swap it until I'm happy.

He did tell me that this problem has been dealt with now, and that the one I'm getting is from a new batch.  Hopefully we will all get satisfaction from this in the end.

I had my third one this weekend and it still has a faint crease !! Aug batch. The dealer said that the problem had been dealt with but it doesn't seem to be the case. I think @Bravia55HX923 seems to be right in waiting for a later batch.

It seems I might have better odds at the National Lotterey. Now, I am so tired now that I really can't bother any more. Yes, as you say, I have blown almost 3K on what was expected to be a high end TV with no assembly/manufacturing features or defects. I haven't got it nor have I received the "promised" extra pair of 3D glasses.

The redeeming feature is that the picture is good but then would have preferred to be told before I parted with my money that the picture will be very good but you will also get the crease !!

So, lesson learnt from 3K spend is

a) don't be greedy and buy pre-release and

b) definitely don't trust Sony when they say they have fixed/dealt something or are providing an additional undocumented "feature"

Will not forget these expensive lessons.

abjtke,

you appear to have gone through an unfortunate chain of events with three of the same, clearly left with two choices now one would be to wait till sept batch, but let me be clear that theres absolutely no guarantee here either!, or you could throw in the towel and see the new LG LW980T or you could hold fire for Toshiba's new offering which is the latest 4K resolution offering with glasses free 3D, but thats likely to be expensive!,

the wait here with Sony is very tiring after going through this once with an LG set but since i have a loaner i can wait a little longer.

everybody knows that this latest "feature" on a 3k tv is unacceptable in terms of the latest high specification tv set and god only knows why a big corporation like Sony chose not to correct it, a simple fix really, but hey they can afford to lose a few sales and not take any notice of those that complain.

can you see the "fault" while watching normal pictures ?.

mine has a slight visible fault on a solid blue screen, but when watching anything, its not noticable.

3 weeks in now and still happy.

I've just received my 55HX923 (Saturday 10th September).  I've studied the picture very closely indeed, and I can honestly say that I can't see any sign of the creases which we've all noticed before (I could see them on the 46" shop display model).

It's difficult to tell, but there might just be a barely perceptible dimming of picture brightness at the extreme left and right edges, although you really have to look closely, and even then it might just be imaginary.  In truth, I have to say that the picture appears perfect.

If my TV is representative of all the latest ones coming through, then it looks like the problem has been fixed. I'm looking forward to hearing from others, so we can see if the problem really has been resolved.

i take it the SUB551S stand is still part of the package then?.

It is, yes.  Mind you, it's not exactly a handsome thing, to my eyes.  The silver colour looks a bit "cheap" under the black screen of the TV.  In the end I used the table stand that also comes in the box, and ran the sound through my separate sound system.

If you don't have a separate system, then I think the SUB551S would do a great job.

You know, since my initial report I've been obsessed with looking for the crease.  (I really must stop, in case I catch OCD.  )  I think I may have spotted the faintest trace of it against certain shades of blue background, but it's very fleeting and, as I say, it's so slight it may just be psychological.

I do think there is a very slight tendency to occasional darkening at those outermost edges, but honestly, you really need to concentrate to see it.  In fact, I bet there isnt' a TV in the world where you can't point to some subtle, fleeting thing and say "Ah hah, did you see that?".

I have to say that the picture is superb.  Perfect, really.  There are endless adjustments so it'll probably take days to get it set up just right for every input source.  But even straight out of the box it creates a damn good impression. (I haven't tried it with 3D - not at all interested.)

My first Sony (a 46" from about 2 years ago) had such backlight bleed problems I gave it away to a family member after only a year.  It's replacement, a 50" Panny plasma flickered so badly I didn't like watching it, and I had to sell it.  This third time seems to be lucky: the picture is smooth, radiant, flicker-free and with a superb contrast ratio.  I've at last found a TV picture that really suits me.

I'm looking forward to hearing some more views as the latest batch comes through to you guys.

MrThack,

yes its a fantastic tv, hopefully get mine replaced soon, please stop overanalysing it, if the "crease cannot be seen when viewing thats great the occasional darkening at the outermost edges is nothing, if anything it will be the black border altering the light reflecting off it!, its nothing (probs the on set of OCD!!),

the best picture results ( and i was still experimenting ) is custom mode and set the basics with a THX disc and turn all picture processing off including the light sensor!,

i did all that then whacked a copy of Predators on and could not believe how good it looked!!

have fun.

BTW, how did YOUR thread end up with it looking like it was posted by ME!! LOL:smileywink:

abjtke,

any THX certified dvd or blu ray will have the THX set up on it or you could download an optimiser from a torrent site.

should play fine in a PS3 find the optimiser in the menu on a disc.
