WMA and MP3 playback interruptions under Vista

WMA and MP3 playback interruptions under Vista

Hello,

I have a SONY VAIO VGN-FE21S notebook and I'm using the latest Vista audio
driver from the SONY-VAIO support website, which seems to cause a problem:

After a clean Vista Ultimate installation I noticed that the playback of wma files (the demo files that came with Vista) and mp3 files (played fine under XP) is shortly interrupted about 25 seconds before the end of each file -- not before that point and not after. This happens not always, but very (!) often.

How can this be fixed?

Thank you!

Hello Rich,

Have you checked the plug-ins that WMP is using (Tools > Plug-ins > any usable Plug-in in use will be ticked). If there are any I suggest that you try disabling them and see if this cures the problem.

Good idea, but when I looked at Options > Plug-ins I just found 3 Plug-ins
in the Visualistion Category, which can't be disabled. All the other
categories were empty.

BUT...:

Suddenly after my last reply to Vaio e-Support, which was not very funny,
this answer followed (normally I have to wait at least 4 days!):

More specific directions for your card are as follows:
Open Start-> Control Panel-> Hardware and Sound-> Sound
Open the Playback tab.
Right click Sigmatel CXD9872AKD High Definition Audio Codec and select
properties
Open the effects tab and use the option to disable system effects
Click Ok and test the playback again.
##########

I tried it, but could only right click on "Speakers / Headphones SigmaTel
High Definition Audio CODEC Working" or "Digital Output
Device (S/P DIF) SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC Working".

I selected Properties > Effects and then the option "Disable
System Effects". Then I played 5 WMA files in Windows Media Player,
which now played OK.

I played 10 MP3 files, which still showed interruptions.
I counted the seconds: the interruptions occur exactly 13 seconds before
the end of each file, when the file is played for the first time. If you
move the Seek slider backwards and play the problematic part once again,
it sounds normal.

Also I noticed that there is a delay of about 5 seconds after double
clicking on a sound file, before it is played (also when skipping forward
or bachward to the beginning of a file).

It was curious, that when I returned to the dialog box with
the "Effects" tag, I had to notice that the option "Disable
System Effects" was de-selected again! I did not deselect it,
so somehow it must have been reset by software...

I could not reproduce that resetting behaviour later.

After I disabled system effects again, suddenly ALL sound
files (WMA and MP3) played well!!!

The only thing I want to know:
Which system effects are disabled when I select
"Disable System Effects"?
I couldn't find a help file regarding that feature, but
I worry that some system effects which I will NEED later,
will not be available when using that option as a side effect.
Please give me information about that! - Thanks!

Rainer

So it was an enhancement that was causing the problem but the route to the options was slightly different to that on my system.

I have no idea, but if your system is working correctly then enjoy and worry about this (and post back) if you encounter further problems
