New CX730E.

I have just purchased a handycam CX730E. I can download photos to iphoto and video to imovie, but Final Cut Express does not recognise the camera. Using Mac 10.7.3.

please refer to the following support note from Apple:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2134?viewlocale=en_US

Symptoms

After you update to Quicktime 7.5.5, you may not be able to ingest AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) clips in the Log and Transfer window.

Resolution

Download and install Final Cut Express 4.0.1 or later by choosing Software Update from the Apple menu.

As an alternative, these steps may resolve the issue in Final Cut 4.0:

  1. Click the gear icon at the top of the Log and Transfer window, and choose Preferences.
  2. In the Source column, open the disclosure triangle to the left of AVCHD Plugin.
  3. Click the arrow to the right of AVCHD in the "Transcode to" column, and choose "Apple Intermediate Codec".

I am already running 4.0.1. The situation is that the camera connects to the USB and it appears on the desktop, but I cannot capture the data to Final Cut.

This is almost certainly an issue with Quick Time.

If cmosse's suggestion doesn't work, you may have to import into FCP via iMovie.

It's an odd one, as I'm fairly sure QT is used by both apps: check out the Apple support forums as this is bound to be a common complaint.

Cheers

In geeneral,  the Sony HDR-CX730E fits 1080/50p recording. It is a pity that FCE and iMovie can't surpport 1080 50p/60p AVCHD .mts/.m2ts now.

You can use FCP to edit them. FCP surpports to import 50p files sometimes ( https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3871881?start=15&tstart=0 )

If FCP can'y help you, you also can use the professional AVCHD Converter to help you transcode 50p AVCHD MTS/M2TS to 25p/50i AIC for editing in iMovie/FCE on Mac.

Here is the guide on make Sony CX730E work with Final Cut Express on Mac.

Hope the post give you a big hint!
