Playback DV tapes via High Definition Handycam

I have few mini DV tapes recorded on TRV900E which I no longer have. I would like to purchase a USED High Definition Handycam HDR HC5E/HC7E so that I can view the tapes using the HDMI output in SD format. Is this possible? Is this a good idea - any suggestions.

Hello samraj - Welcome to the Sony Forums

As far as I am aware, you will be able to play these tapes back on the HC5E/HC7E. However, regarding the SD format, when you output via the HDMI cable the screen should display the quality that the original video was recorded in. Viewing in SD is usually possible with HD content by viewing it through a standard definition connection.

Overall, picking up a second hand camera at the right price will probably work out cheaper than trying to buy a standalone DV player anyway.

Thanks,

Simon

Thanks for confirming, as I was looking for a player/ deck to playback the cassettes via the HDMI.The HDR HC5E/HC7E manual mentions playback in SD format?! If it playbacks in the recorded quality I'll be happy...

Hello again

If the camera manual mentions explicitly that playback is SD, you may wish to test it out if possible before purchase.

As an alternative, if you were to pick up a DV camcorder with FireWire output (this may involve getting a device to make your computer FireWire compatible), this should also give a 'like for like' output.

Thanks,

Simon

In one place it says palyback as it is DV original/ SD quality. I'd like to buy these specific models like Player/Deck as they can playback Mini DV tapes via HDMI directly to the TV without going thru the Laptop/Computer.
